Eating at the Hütte Restaurant

Grade: A – highly recommend

I wasn’t sure what to expect the first time I ate at the Hütte Restaurant last year, but was pleasantly surprised. So, when my father said he wanted to eat there again just after Christmas, excitement enveloped me. This year we tagged along two of my grandma’s – one from each side of the family. 🙂

The Hütte Restaurant is nestled in the mountains of Helvetia, West Virginia. To tell you a little about Helvetia, in the 2010 census there were a total of 59 residents. I think that many people live just on my street! Helvetia was settled in 1869 by the Swiss and was at one time a bustling town. There is still an old-fashioned Post Office, a library, a Kultur haus, a few other buildings, and of course – the Hütte Restaurant.

The restaurant is full of charm and antiques. You’ll feel as if you’ve taken a step back in time. Speaking of time travel – they do not accept debit/credit cards. So, be sure to visit an ATM prior to your visit! The waitress is super sweet. The ambiance is perfect. If you leave there with an empty tummy, you have no one but yourself to blame.

I would recommend starting off with the Helvetia Cheese plate. (This year we ordered the cheese plate with fruit and it was more fruit than cheese. Just saying.) They make their own cheese – and it’s fabulous!

My father ordered the Sauerbraten. It was delicious, but I think it is an acquired taste for some. I forget what my mother ordered (bad, I know!). Well, she was on the other side of the table and I was too transfixed by my dinner. She either had the ham, sausage or bratwurst. Between my two visits here, I think we’ve tried everything from the menu. 🙂

Between the cheese, the fruit, the bread, the salad, the dinner……I had to, I mean just had to leave room for dessert. I remembered what awaited me. The oh-so-delicious peach cobbler! GET THE PEACH COBBLER! Get the rest of your dinner in a to-go box if you have to, but you must absolutely order the peach cobbler. The only acceptable reason for not getting the peach cobbler is if you’re allergic.

All in all, this place is a hidden gem. There is no hustle or bustle that you’ll get from a large city. There are no fancy bells or whistles. But there is history here. There are many festivals and events throughout the year. So if you have the chance, pay Helvetia a visit.

Also – they are looking for someone who has experience with wool. No one is there to make their wool blankets anymore. So, so sad. (Their blankets are comfy).
